Broadband Troubles
I went home Friday to a problem with my broadband connection. After many hours of troubleshooting my systems, on the assumption that receiving an IP address via DHCP meant I was actually connected to my ISP, I finally checked the link light on my cable modem, and found that it was not actually connected to the outside world. Apparently these cable modems are willing to assign 192.168.x.x addresses in the event that they are unable to connect to ISPs.

In any case, I'll be out of touch until Time Warner figures out what has gone wrong and fixes it. That might happen tonight, but who knows.

the silly cable-modem routers do the routing thing without any outside help, which is a good thing really because your home network stays up even when the outside is going to hell in a snowstore. Thus the kids can link x-boxes together and kill each other remotly.

I just figured out how to get the corporate laptop to talk to the work VPN from home, so i do get to work during a snowstorme. come to think of it, maybe that was a bad idea...

That depends on whether or not you get paid for working at home. 8-)
